Travel Theme: Deep

I have been gone for far too long from this little page of mine. Ailsa’s weekly challenge is here to the rescue: This week’s theme is Deep.

Deep like the tunnels of San Cristóbal in Puerto Rico. Down-down they go to the  dungeon, with its walls peeling, grooves for explosives over your head, and–the centerpiece of it all–wistful drawings of frigates, left, it is said, by a Spanish captain awaiting his execution over 300 years ago.

Deep like the ravines cut by the Colorado River. Here, the mighty river makes a U-turn through Glen Canyon, a hypnotic spot known as Horseshoe Bend. Have you been there?

Deep like the oceans that rockfish roam. I met this one in the murky waters of the Kelp Forest at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Deep like spring grass in my back yard, at its most alive in April.

And, back in Puerto Rico, deep like the San Juan Bay seems at dusk when pelicans dive for their supper, as the cats of Paseo del Morro and I watch from the old City Wall.
